A triple dose of design kudos

Monday, November 21st, 2011

Graves Fowler just got a package of “Way to Go” certificates. One of our fundraising campaigns, a logo and a marketing package all received American Graphic Design Awards. The competition honors outstanding design in all forms of media. It’s sponsored by Graphic Design USA, a New York-based news magazine for our industry and has been an annual tradition for over 40 years. Here are the winners.

The Combined Federal Campaign of the National Capital Area needed a new identity, marketing strategy and materials. GF worked with them for two campaigns to launch the identity and establish recognition. The result? A record-breaking total of over $132 million in pledges.

National Coalition to End Childhood Lead Poisoning asked GF to create the identity for a national initiative that would educate people about the link between unhealthy housing and children’s health. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, Centers for Disease Control and other major Federal agencies have partnered with the Coalition to provide an integrated approach to this important issue.

Nativity Miguel Network of Schools asked GF to develop new marketing materials that would help them open doors to education for underserved students across the country and make clear this organization’s leading role in the field.

BZZZ of the week: Plain Language

Tuesday, June 28th, 2011

A weekly post of catchwords that buzz around today. The BZZZ for this week is: Plain Language.

We recently picked up an award at the National Institutes of Health Plain Language Awards. Did you know that plain language is in? President Obama even signed a Plain Language Writing Act in 2010. This movement isn’t about dumbing down copy. Instead, it celebrates clear, to the point writing that is a joy to read. Federal agencies are stepping up to meet the requirements. What a welcome change!

Our award was for a video on Tai Chi and Qi Gong we helped to produce for NIH’s National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine. I wish I could claim the writing, but our role was art directing the shoot and designing the packaging for the CD. We’re still proud to be part of such a sane movement.

Here’s to plain language!

New work: Marketing for schools

Thursday, June 16th, 2011

“Education is the civil rights issue of our generation.” —Arne Duncan, Secretary of Education

How true! The Nativity Miguel Network of Schools asked Graves Fowler to develop new marketing materials that would help them open doors to education for underserved students across the country and make clear this organization’s leading role in the field.

Here is the outcome of our work.

Making home a good place to be

Tuesday, November 16th, 2010

Lead paint. Mold. Pest infestations. A child’s health can be put in danger when home is not a safe place to live. The Green and Healthy Homes Initiative is a coordinated effort to break the link between unhealthy housing and unhealthy children. From November 4-21, there is a national dialogue happening 24/7 online to lay out the challenges, generate ideas and create comprehensive solutions. Check out the cause, and take special note of the logo. We’re proud to say it’s one of ours.

A scientific approach to Tai Chi

Thursday, September 2nd, 2010

This summer we ventured into video direction with a new initiative for NIH’s National Center on Complementary and Alternative Medicine. These folks look at treatments outside the usual scope of Western medicine. Graves Fowler has worked with the Center’s dedicated staff for several years to spread the word about how to evaluate alternative treatments and make wise decisions based on both science and personal experience. The shoot was an inspiration. Just wait till you see the video. More to come!

Monday, August 30th, 2010

A new website launched this summer for John Thompson III and his foundation. The Graves Fowler team designed and developed this new tool to help the Thompson family expand their work for children and families our Washington DC community. Go John and Monica! Go Hoyas!

Who says charitable giving is down?

Wednesday, March 3rd, 2010

During this past year we’ve been working closely with the Combined Federal Campaign for the National Capital Area. (That’s the big charitable giving program for Federal employees.) We won the contract to develop the strategy and promotions for the 2009 campaign. It’s been a whopping big job.

CFCNCA set an audacious goal of raising $64 million, and that’s a $1.2 million increase over the 2008 receipts. The recession has hit charities hard. No matter how great our strategies and marketing solutions were, we knew we had a big hill to climb.

Last week we attended the finale for the campaign and celebrated $66 million in pledges! That’s a lot of help for people in need here at home and around the world. Thanks to Global Impact, the management team, for leading the campaign with nonstop energy and making our plan a reality.

A donor who made our day

Monday, February 22nd, 2010

It isn’t often (in fact I can’t remember when this ever happened before) that we get unsolicited feedback from the people who actually receive and use the promotion materials we design. Just last week, however, the Archdiocese of Washington sent us a copy of the kickoff brochure for the 2010 annual appeal. A donor had jotted comments all over the piece about what he (or she) felt worked in the design and messaging.

“This bulletin insert is very well done and provides relevant information for making an informed decision on contributing to the 2010 Appeal—Thank you to those who designed it.”

Wow. And thank you to this anonymous fan who made our day.

Speeding new treatments to market. Saving lives.

Friday, September 4th, 2009

That’s what drives the people at Nextrials. This company was founded in 1999 to change the way data in clinical research is collected and prepared for FDA approval. To celebrate a solid ten years in business, they asked Graves Fowler to relaunch their brand identity top to bottom – new logo, trade show exhibit, print collateral and a web site facelift. The “new” Nextrials was unveiled at the CRO Partnership Meeting in Orlando, Florida. BTW… Nextrials has just been named to the Inc. 5,000 list for the third year in a row. Congrats!
