El Jefe wins big at the Art Directors Club annual show

Jeff Everett, Senior Designer at Graves Fowler, continues to make music with his poster designs. His promotion posters walked away with the show this year at the Art Directors Club Gala on June 7, 2008. Out of the nine Gold Awards for design that were given, Jeff won four. Even the wrestling poster scored! The exhibit was judged by top designers Josh Chen, Chip Kidd and Ally Lack. To see Jeff’s work (and even make a purchase), go to: www.eljefedesign.com.

Making the cut for Locks of Love

Anya Kholodnov, our office manager, has made a gigantic change. Her beautiful locks now adorn a child suffering from hair loss and unable to afford a hairpiece. Anya’s hair went to Locks of Love. Now a child somewhere is enjoying a new sense of self confidence and normalcy—and Anya is our sleek new “Director of First Impressions.”

Jeff Everett’s music posters are Sweet!

Our own Jeff Everett’s fame in poster design continues to grow. In February, his work will be featured at Sweet: The Graphic Beauty of the Contemporary Rock Poster at the University of Maryland. Sweet is an exhibition that explores the resurgence of this art form and the artists leading the movement. Rock posters grew out of turn-of-the-century Art Nouveau advertisement posters, through travel advertisements from pre-WWII, and gained status during the psychedelic rock culture of the 1960s. Today, contemporary artists are once again utilizing the “hands-on” techniques of producing silk-screened posters to promote the music they love. Sweet will run February 6 – April 5 at the UMD Art Gallery. Congratulations, Jeff!

It’s become a holiday tradition...20 boxes this year went to SOME (So Others Might Eat) from the Graves Fowler crew. Some of us were better wrappers than others!

A trip to Tanzania with Catholic Relief Services

To work with international relief efforts more effectively, Cynthia Fowler traveled to Africa for some firsthand learning. She visited communities and grass roots organizations in Tanzania and Kenya that are delivering home care to HIV/AIDS victims, creating small investment cooperatives and empowering women to feed their children. The trip was organized by CRS to connect the work in Africa directly with lay leaders in the US who can raise money and awareness. Cynthia also toured a small design school in Nairobi and a Quaker Alternatives to Violence workshop for Rwandan survivors. “I came home committed to bringing a global perspective to our work at Graves Fowler,” she says.

Arts & Academics

Children and art are both top priorities at Graves Fowler Creative. GF’s president, Terry Graves, recently served as a judge for the Arts and Academics Fair at St. John the Baptist in Silver Spring, Maryland. The event is run much like a science fair with graphic arts, interior design, cartography, special effects and other art-related subjects presented.

Shoebox Gifts for SOME

The Graves Fowler holiday party usually involves lots of eating and giving gifts to each other. This year we decided to give to others, too. We filled and wrapped 20 boxes of socks, hats, toiletry items and treats for distribution through So Others Might Eat (SOME). It was more satisfying than eating a plate of fudge! (Although we had some of that, too.)

Working Together to Fund the Cure

The Graves Fowler crew helped to staff participants in the recent “2005 Walk for PKD” in Washington, DC. Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD) is a common genetic, life threatening disease affecting more people than cystic fibrosis, muscular dystrophy, hemophilia, Down syndrome and sickle cell anemia — combined. This year the Walk raised over $1.5 million for research and services.

Honoring Neighborhood History

Mariann Seriff, our creative director, worked with a team of volunteers in her home community to win a listing on the National Register of Historic Places. This small enclave of contemporary homes in Kensington, Maryland, was designed by Charles Goodman and is one of the first contemporary developments in the county. It is noteworthy for the use of unusual materials, walls of glass, and forested settings. The National Register status will help homeowners maintain the original integrity of the architecture as their houses age and need maintenance and remodeling.
